Sony's loss grows, cuts earnings forecast
TOKYO (AP) ? Sony's red ink worsened in the April-June quarter and it lowered its full-year earnings forecast as it battles a strong yen and declining sales of liquid crystal display TVs and video game machines.
The Japanese electronics and entertainment company Thursday reported a quarterly loss of 24.6 billion yen ($316 million) compared with a 15.5 billion yen loss a year earlier.
Sales edged up 1.4 percent to 1.52 trillion yen ($19.4 billion), helped by cameras, professional broadcasting products and mobile phones.
Tokyo-based Sony Corp. lowered its earnings forecast for the business year through March 2013 to a 20 billion yen ($256 million) profit, down from 30 billion yen projected in May, citing uncertainty in foreign exchange rates and global demand.
The company said it was hurt in the April-June quarter by a strong yen, which erodes overseas earnings, and by declining sales of liquid-crystal display TVs and video game machines.
It also got hit by a 20 billion yen income tax expense, had 11.3 billion yen in restructuring charges for the quarter, and invested heavily in image sensor production.
Sony posted a 456.6 billion yen loss in its last business year. That was the fourth straight year of losses and the biggest loss in the 66-year history of the maker of the PlayStation game machines, "Spider-Man" movies and the Walkman portable.
Once the stellar brand symbolizing Japan's technological prowess, Sony has lost its shine. It is getting beaten in TVs by South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and by Apple Inc. in devices such as the iPhone and iPod.
Sony's troubles were exacerbated last year by factory and supplier damage in northeastern Japan from the March earthquake and tsunami.
Key to Sony's turnaround is stopping the red ink in its TV business, which has lost money for eight straight years. The losses are expected to continue for the current business year. And it has yet to carve out new areas for profits it has long promised like smartphones and tablet computers.
Sony is aiming for a comeback under Kazuo Hirai, appointed president in April, who has headed the company's game division and built his career in the U.S.
Sony said that for the latest quarter, TV sales had fallen but operating losses in the division had been trimmed to less than half of what they were the year before.
Earlier this year, Hirai said the company will cut 10,000 jobs, or about 6 percent of its global workforce, and turn a profit in TVs by the fiscal year ending March 2014.
The job cuts, announced by Hirai, come on top of a couple of rounds under his predecessor, Welsh-born Howard Stringer, who remains chairman and was the first foreigner to head Sony.
In its movies division, Sony achieved a 6 percent increase in sales with the hit "Men in Black 3," and better cable and network program revenue. But it had an operating loss partly because of marketing expenses for this year's films including "The Amazing Spider-Man."
In music, Sony suffered both lower sales and profit partly because the overall music market shrank, according to the company. Best-sellers included Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" and Usher's "Looking 4 Myself."
Sony said an investor group it is part of completed the acquisition of leading music catalog, EMI Music Publishing, in June by forming a joint venture that acquired the catalog for $2.2 billion. Sony, in conjunction with the estate of Michael Jackson, paid $320 million to acquire a 40 percent stake in that joint venture.
Sony has also been struggling in games as sales dropped for its PlayStation Portable handheld and PlayStation 3 home console, as well as game software for those machines. Such sales losses were only partially offset by the PlayStation Vita portable, which went on sale in December.
Sony shares, which have lost more than half their value over the past year, gained 2.4 percent to 964 yen in Tokyo. Trading had ended before earnings were announced.

NEW YORK (AP) ? NBC's researchers are finding that people who know the results of London Olympics events before they are shown on tape delay are more ? not less ? likely to watch them.
The preliminary research unveiled Thursday undercuts an assumption that has guided production of Olympic broadcasts from locales outside of U.S. time zones for decades. NBC has been criticized for not televising live some of the London Games' marquee events like swimming and gymnastics so they can be aired later in prime time.
Two-thirds of people questioned in a survey Sunday said they watch the prime-time Olympics telecast even if they know the results ahead of time. People who watched the events live earlier in the day via computer screen watched the tape-delayed broadcast 50 percent longer than those who hadn't, said Alan Wurtzel, NBC's chief researcher.
NBC has been getting far better ratings for the London Games than it ever expected, outpacing the 2008 Games in Beijing. A month ago, NBC had predicted it would lose some $200 million on the games, but network executives said Wednesday the company would break even. NBC Sports Chairman Mark Lazarus said Thursday the company could even make money if the good ratings continued.
The network is airing all of the competition live via video stream. But the network's decision to hold back big events because no live competition takes place during U.S. prime time has led to widespread complaints on social media. The longtime theory was that fewer people would watch in prime time if they could see them live earlier.
Lazarus held back when asked whether this would mean tape delay will become a thing of the past after the London Games.
"We will continue to innovate our coverage," he said on a conference call Thursday. "I won't make a proclamation here about what we are going to do, but be sure we are analyzing everything."
The company Usamp questioned 1,000 adults who said they had watched Olympics competition. The survey found that 43 percent of the people who watched the prime-time telecasts said they knew the results before tuning in.
Wurtzel said that the Olympics are encouraging consumers to try new things. Some 75 percent of people who said they had tried streaming Olympics coverage on tablets said they had never streamed video before on the devices.
Olympics viewership was up 28 percent among teenagers over Beijing, even more sharply among teenage girls.
"Why is this important? Wurtzel said. "Because we're cultivating the next Olympics generation."

He hasn't text me back yet, what do you think I ... - Love Advice Forum
Okay, beforehand I'd just like to clarify that I'm not as crazy-obsessed as I might seem in this post - honestly! I just get super analytical when it comes to relationships. Anyway, here's the question:
I've been texting this guy back and fourth for about three weeks now. He always texts me in the morning and we'll maybe exchange about 15 texts a day (if that). He's in the Navy and I totally accept that his days are pretty hectic. On Saturday night I made the silly mistake of drunk dialling/texting him but (fortunately) his phone was switched off. In the morning, I totally panicked when I remembered the previous nights events but decided it would be best to wait and see if he text me. Eventually he text me asking how I was doing and explained that his phone was out of charge otherwise he'd have answered my calls/texts. He asked where I went the night before and we continued with a normal chat.
Oh, I've forgot to mention that from about week 1 we've arranged to meet up this Friday as he hadn't had a free weekend previously and he's doing a course in England this week so this Friday was the first time he's available.
Anyway, back to the question. On Sunday he told me he was driving down to England that night so I knew he wouldn't text me much. I received a text at lunch time on Monday asking how I was doing, if I had much planned for the day and he told me that he hadn't had any sleep due to the long drive. I replied and he's yet to text back - it's now after 11pm on Tuesday night.
I don't know how I should react to this? I don't want to seem as though I don't have anything better to do than worry about him texting me but at the same time I don't want him to think I have lost interest. Plus, I keep wondering if he even got my text because it's unusual for him to have not text me back. Unless he's lost interest? I know that he'll be super busy, too, so I'm really not sure how best to react! Anyone have any suggestions? I hate playing games!
It's just weird, also, because he's made a point of saying to me a few times that I "better keep in touch when he's away" so I'm confused as to why he's the one not keeping in touch.
