Syria: 'More than 80 killed' in Aleppo University blasts

?The warplanes of this criminal regime do not respect a mosque, a church or a university,? said a student who gave his name as Abu Tayem.

Syrians gather at the scene after the explosion

A Twitter user called Ahmedosios, who posted pictures of bodies and severed limbs online, added: ?A plane hit with two shells. We saw the plane with our own eyes. I am not going to doubt my eyes and believe regime media.

Video footage showed students carrying their books out of the university after one of the explosions, hurrying away from rising smoke. The camera then shook to the sound of another explosion and people began running.

Other footage posted by students showed tearful survivors taking refuge in a campus building. The university was the seat of protests against the Assad regime in Aleppo, the commercial centre which joined the uprising late.

Rebels have previously carried out bombings against government targets in Aleppo. In October, at least 48 people were killed in a double blast in the city?s main square.

In May a twin suicide car bomb detonated by one of the Islamist rebel groups outside the main military intelligence compound in the capital Damascus killed 55.

The explosions struck an area near the university dormitories and the architecture faculty

The United Nations estimates that at least 60,000 people have been killed since protests in March 2011 turned into an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, who has resisted all international efforts to force a compromise.

In New York, more than 50 countries asked the UN Security Council to refer the crisis to the International Criminal Court, which prosecutes people for genocide and war crimes.

Russia ? Mr Assad?s long-standing ally and arms supplier ? blocked the initiative, calling it ?ill-timed and counterproductive?.

Moscow said it had suspended operations at its consulate in Aleppo after the explosions.

Before 2011, the University of Aleppo, founded in 1958, had 62,500 students.

Many undergraduates have deliberately failed modules to ensure that they do not graduate but are granted deferrals in order to avoid conscription into the army.

Post-graduates must complete their courses or face losing the qualification. As a result hundreds of exiles returned to the country in recent weeks having made careful plans to flee again before the call up is issued.

Set the stage for a meeting note-taker - Business Management Daily

High-speed presentations, rambling discussions, unclear decisions, and vague action items at meetings without agendas make life hard for meeting note-takers, writes Lynn Gaertner-Johnston. Here are a few of her tips for organizing meetings that are easier to record, which she shared in her recent e-newsletter.

  • Have an agenda and distribute it in advance. This helps the note-taker know what is relevant and important enough to record.
  • Include outcomes rather than just topics on your agenda. For example, ?Discussion of team emails? is a topic; ?Agree on best practices for team emails? is an outcome. That outcome tells attendees to work toward agreement, and it informs the note-taker to listen for and record best practices that the group has agreed upon.
  • Help the note-taker come prepared. Be sure the note-taker receives copies of presentations in advance to be ready for any unusual vocabulary or technical terms. Talk with the note-taker before the meeting about how much information you would like to have recorded in the meeting notes.
  • Summarize throughout the meeting so attendees will know what the group has accomplished. This helps everyone know decisions, action items and key points.

Alberta to deliver austere budget March 7

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - The government of Alberta, which has warned about the impact on public coffers of deeply discounted Canadian oil prices, said on Tuesday it will deliver what is expected to be a miserly budget for the country's top energy-producing province on March 7.

Premier Alison Redford's Progressive Conservatives have said weak prices for heavy crude from the Western province's vast oil sands may prevent a return to a hoped-for surplus in the upcoming fiscal year, and that all of Alberta's government departments will have to look for ways to reduce spending.

However, Redford also said this week that deep, across-the-board spending cuts are not in the offing.

Heavy crude has recently sold for more than $40 a barrel under benchmark West Texas Intermediate, due to limited pipeline capacity to move the supplies to the United States as well as delays to a U.S. refinery project that would boost demand for the Alberta oil.

For the current budget year, the government has warned that the deficit could be triple the initial estimate of C$886 million ($901 million).

Catsparella: Baby the Cat Survives Fire Thanks To Pet Oxygen Mask ...

(Click here to watch if video doesn't load)

Baby the cat is lucky to be alive after an Arizona house fire claimed nearly all of her nine lives. Paramedics in San Tan Valley used a kitty-sized oxygen mask to resuscitate the feline, after she was rescued and appeared lifeless on the scene.

The special pet oxygen mask was donated to the fire department a few years ago by staff at nearby?Johnson Ranch Animal Clinic, who raised funds for the?lifesaving?device by?forgoing?their annual gift exchange.?

The black and white cat, who has been with her family for six years, was home alone when the fire broke out. The property sustained heavy damage, but Baby's owner, Cory Vanhoozer, tells? My Fox Phoenix:?"Yeah, that can be fixed. As long as no one else got hurt, that's the most important thing. Everything else is replaceable."

Although there are no official statistics, it is estimated that thousands of pets die each year from smoke inhalation. The special oxygen masks, which come in three sizes designed to help animals such as birds, iguanas, hamsters, dogs, and cats, have been responsible for saving the lives of countless pets from across the country.?

If you're interested in donating/purchasing a kit for your local fire department, contact them first to see if they have a need, and then visit sites such as?Project Breathe,?Pets America, Yuckos, or?H.E.L.P Animals, Inc.?for more information.

Attention student loan borrowers: Tuition.io opens its doors to ...

student-loan-payoff-party

Talk about being in the right place at the right time. With today being the day that America begins putting its New Year?s resolutions into practice and also the morning after both houses of Congress passed a bill to avoid something called a ?fiscal cliff,? intelligent student loan management startup Tuition.io is opening its doors to the public for the first time. For good measure, the company is also announcing several flagship partners that will put it squarely in the path of its target audience.

The one year old company incubated in Santa Monica?s LaunchpadLA accelerator has put the wraps on a four month, 1,500 person private beta in which its systems managed more than $100 million in education debt across over 10,000 individual student loans, and originating from 130 universities ? including the nation?s Top 25. Throughout its beta period, the company gathered user input and subsequently refined the product, with the result being an entirely new UI and dashboard rolling out alongside today?s public launch.

The magic of Tuition.io is that it allows borrowers to manage all of their various student loans, public or private, in one place and then provides simple solutions for understanding and optimizing their repayment. The platform allows users to create customized action plans geared towards reducing on monthly payments or paying loans down faster. In the future, the company will likely offer solutions like debt consolidation and refinancing from trusted third-parties that will both broaden its value proposition and represent a significant revenue opportunity.

Student loans are one of the biggest fiscal clouds hanging over the US today, with more than 37 million people in the country holding more than $1 trillion of education debt ? exceeding both credit card and automotive debt. The fact that each of these borrowers typically has multiple loans from different lenders and service providers ? not to mention the fact that loans are regularly sold between lenders ? only further complicates matters.

For example, Tuition.io co-founder and CEO, and Columbia University alum Brendon McQueen graduated with 12 separate loans totaling $120,000 and quickly realized that manually managing these obligations was a nightmare. Like many great entrepreneurs, he created Tuition.io to scratch his own itch.

In conjunction with its public launch, the company has partnered with Student Veterans of America and OurTime.org to bring awareness of its solution to underserved groups of young Americans. Co-founder and COO Steve Pomerantz, formerly of Maker Studios, indicated that the company is actively working on several other high profile strategic partnerships of this nature which will help raise its profile among young college graduates.

Tuition.io has not yet announced financing publicly, but the company?s AngelList page lists Abhas Gupta of Mohr Davidow Ventures (MDV) as an investor in the company. [Update: Gupta confirmed after posting that MDV Partner Bryan Stolle led an investment by the firm in Tuition.io, but could not offer any other details.] With that in mind, expect an announcement in this regard in the near future. The five person team will likely grow to 10 in the first half of 2013, according to its founders, as the company ramps toward what they predict will be ?substantial revenue? in the third and fourth quarters of the year.

Given that many are calling the student loan mess the ?next mortgage crisis,? there?s no shortage of borrowers and other constituents looking for solutions. The Tuition.io is good, but the company will have to over come a number of daunting obstacles, not the least of them obscurity and general concerns over privacy and online fraud. The fact that the small company must do so with limited resources and that its founders are new to the financial services sector makes success anything but a sure bet. ?For what it?s worth, personal finance juggernaut Mint.com overcame similar challenges in its early days on just $1 million in Seed financing. McQueen and Pomerantz will hope to pull off the same trick.

Many have already taken to calling Tuition.io the ?Mint for student loans.? After more people get a chance to use the service, most will probably just call it a lifesaver.

Cyber war, national security and privacy at Catallaxy Files

Christopher Joye has a monumental piece in the AFR today ? talking about cyber warfare and the threat to Australia. Short precis here.

Sitting in an office in the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation?s Soviet-style building, which mirrors the Orwellian bunker one might imagine, Australia?s most experienced spy master, David Irvine, has a lot on his mind as he gazes over Lake Burley Griffin.

Irvine, the director-general of ASIO, knows Australian business and the government are engaged in a new, and irreversible, ?cold cyberwar?, which the Americans have designated as the fifth and most uncertain defence domain.

Great intro ? good points made throughout the whole piece too. But ? I am not entirely convinced. We read

The Chinese were fingered in the hacking of Barack Obama?s and John McCain?s computers in the 2008 US presidential election campaign. In 2011 they allegedly penetrated the parliamentary email systems of 10 Australian federal ministers, including Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and compromised emails belonging to the European Union President and his advisers.

Okay ? that is very naughty and I expect the appropriate authorities to deal with that. What do ASIO want?

To protect business, ASIO supports Parliament introducing national security legislation making changes to four laws which would require telephone companies and internet service providers to store for at least two years basic information, such as the type, time, duration and identifiers of messages. ASIO?s concern is that the data, which is the minimum it says it needs to investigate threats, is being discarded by smaller telecommunication companies.

Civil libertarians argue the changes would be an unjustified invasion of privacy and raise the spectre of a security state.

Really? So storing Australian phone details will stop the Chinese from hacking the Prime Minister?s email? How does that work? A foreign power poses a credible threat to national security (I can accept that proposition) and in response the authorities want to spy on their own citizens (that?s the bit I?m struggling with).

Current in Noblesville ? Showing your home in its best light

Functional, beautiful lighting can?t be created from a single light source. To achieve optimum lighting for your home, consider using layers of light in each room. To help you visualize this, try thinking of each light source as a layer in a cake. Each layer brings a different flavor to the cake, but they come together to make a single delicious dessert. Layering lighting works in the same way, by blending together multiple light sources to create a rich and ambient atmosphere.

The bottom layer of the lighting cake is called the ?overall? layer or ?ambient? layer. This is the foundation of the room?s lighting design. Chandeliers, ceiling fixtures and wall sconces fall into this category, and are intended to create soft illumination for everyday use. The ambient layer will determine the general brightness of the room.?Choose to lower the lights?in bedrooms and dining rooms to generate a romantic atmosphere. Or use brighter ones in the kitchen to make the room feel vibrant and energetic.

The next layer of lighting is the ?task? lighting. This bright layer illuminates specific areas or surfaces to help with activities like cooking or reading. Because task lighting is more direct,?using more of these lights?instead of ambient lighting can help you save on energy bills.

Accent lighting refers to the top layer of our lighting system. This lighting helps enhance the room and create visual interest. You can use accent lighting to illuminate art or architectural elements. Accent lights are usually adjustable so they can be used to produce a variety of styles for the room. Put the icing on the cake by implementing decorative lights. This layer doesn?t necessarily add functional light to the room; it?s mainly there to complete the look of the room. Make sure these lights are on the dim side so they don?t overpower the rest of your d?cor.

Light layering techniques are especially relevant now around the holidays. String lights and candles are the perfect third or fourth layer for your home lighting scheme. Dim the ambient lights to make your Christmas tree and decorations really shine. A fireplace can also act as a cozy lighting source. Have fun decorating and happy holidays to you all!

Useful Advice In Personal Bankruptcy You Neede To Know ...

Repossessions, late fees and legal action due to financial hardships can be difficult to bear. You can eliminate calls from debt collectors and get your finances back on track by filing for bankruptcy. Read this article for helpful tips that will get you through this process.

Getting unsecured credit post-bankruptcy will likely be difficult. If that?s the case, it is beneficial to apply for one or even two secured cards. This will prove that you want to improve your credit score. In time, it may be possible for you to obtain unsecured cards.

Understand the differences between Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If Chapter 7 is what you file, your debts will get eliminated entirely. Your former ties with creditors will cease to exist. Bankruptcy under the rules of Chapter 13, on the other hand, require you to work out a payment arrangement to pay back the agreed upon amounts. It?s crucial that you know the differences between all of the various kinds of bankruptcies so that you may choose the best option for your situation.

Do a little bit of research into the regulations having to do with filing for bankruptcy before you begin the process. If you do not file for bankruptcy properly, you might run into a lot of different issues. If you commit severe mistakes, your bankruptcy could be dismissed. It is important to learn the bankruptcy code before filing bankruptcy. The entire process will be much easier when you move forward with awareness.

As you are considering filing for personal bankruptcy, it?s a given that your creditors will be trying very hard to contact you. If you arrive at any agreements with your creditors, be sure to get them in writing. Offers of flexibility received from your creditors can greatly affect your bankruptcy case, but they must be in written form.

Once your bankruptcy is discharged, wait two months, then order your credit report from the three major bureaus. Errors occur, so make sure things appear exactly as they should. If you notice any errors, address them immediately so you can start rebuilding your credit.

Don?t ever pay a bankruptcy attorney for a consultation, and ask a lot of questions. Most lawyers provide a consultation for free, so consult with many of them before picking which one you want to hire. Only choose a lawyer if you feel like your questions were answered. It is not necessary to make a final decision right away. You have lots of time for consulting with other lawyers.

Make a comprehensive list of all of your financial information before you file for bankruptcy. Neglecting to include the smallest of detail can lead to a petition being dismissed. Even if it?s a small sum, make sure it is listed. Include all jobs, assets and loans.

Stay in touch with your attorney so you know what he or she is doing regarding your bankruptcy. Talk on the phone or send emails on a regular basis to stay informed. High volume legal practices are not immune to making mistakes now and then. No matter what you hear, lawyers are just as human as you.

Be sure that you include all debts you want discharged in your bankruptcy filing. Any debts you forget to list will not be discharged. You must ensure that all essential data is recorded in order to guarantee that every debt is included in your discharge.

Do not just assume they each debt you have will be completely wiped away when filing for Chapter 7. Debts that can not be eliminated might need to be revised and a new payment arrangement made. Fines from courts, child support and alimony are examples on non-discharged debt.

While personal bankruptcy can always be an option, don?t do it before looking at other options. Keep in mind that a number of debt consolidation services aren?t legit, and will only worsen your debt. Keep the advice from this piece in mind to help you make smart financial decisions.

A great deal of information is out there about currency markets. All of the most useful information, however, is right here in this article. Top Health and Fitness Trends for 2013 | Jamie Scott Fitness

Affordable Group Fitness
Jamie Scott Fitness devotees are way ahead of the curve on this one. Personal training in small groups is one of the top 10 fitness trends for 2013, according to both the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Council on Exercise. From group classes to small-group personal training?both mainstays of the JSF family?exercising as a group is becoming more and more common as people realize all of the benefits it provides. Group personal training is less expensive than one-on-one sessions since you share the cost with others, and many people find it more comfortable since all the focus isn?t directed solely at them.

Calisthenics Similar to Your Gym-Class Memories?
Remember gym classes in high school? Often short on specialized equipment, they were long o2013-health-trendsn calisthenics, using your own body as resistance. Push-ups, sit-ups, squats, lunges, planks?training using these kinds of tried-and-true exercises is heating up in 2013. This trend, like the group fitness trend, has to do with getting back to basics and saving on costs without sacrificing results.

Specialized Diets

Well, you can expect this trend to continue as new programs aimed at avoiding food sensitivities crop up more and more in the coming year. In addition to gluten, look for soy, dairy and healthy sugars to be on the food sensitivity list.
